GAME PREVIEW: SUNS AT LAKERS

by NBA.com

Phoenix Suns guard Devin Booker is on course to join rare company in the NBA.

If he feels well enough to play Sunday afternoon at the Los Angeles Lakers, he'll share the Staples Center floor with a member of that elite club.

Booker, who turned 22 on Oct. 30, is averaging 24.5 points and 7.0 assists in 18 games this season. The only NBA players to average at least 24 points and seven assists at age 22 or younger are Derrick Rose (2010-11), LeBron James (2004-05) and Oscar Robertson (1960-61).

James, who will turn 34 on Dec. 30, signed with the Lakers in the offseason and is having one of the best seasons of his 16-year career, averaging 28.1 points, 7.8 rebounds and 6.6 assists through 22 games.

James hasn't averaged at least 28 points, seven rebounds and six assists since the 2009-10 season -- his last in his first tour with the Cleveland Cavaliers before signing with the Miami Heat.

Booker sat out a 99-85 loss to the visiting Orlando Magic on Friday night because of a sore foot and he's considered day-to-day. A rematch against James and the Lakers (13-9) should inspire Booker to play through the pain, however.

They matched up on Oct. 24 in Phoenix and the Lakers won 131-113 for their most one-sided victory of the season. Booker had 23 points, seven assists and seven rebounds while James had 19 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

The Lakers went 3-5 in October, but found their groove while going 10-4 in November. They capped the month by defeating the visiting Dallas Mavericks 114-103 on Friday night.

The Lakers seem to have found an identity that traces back to the defensive end of the floor.

"When we're out on defense, and we're getting in the passing lanes, and we're rebounding the basketball, I think that starts the offense," Lakers forward Brandon Ingram told the Los Angeles Times after the win against Dallas. "We're at our best when we're running and gunning and just pushing the ball ahead, just making layups, our shooters shooting 3s and just feeling comfortable on the floor."

In addition to being without Booker on Friday night, the Suns were also without second-leading scorer TJ Warren. Phoenix (4-18) has lost four in a row and seven of eight, despite holding a fourth-quarter lead in four of the past six games.

"We've just got to finish out these games," Suns center DeAndre Ayton said after the loss to Orlando. "Sometimes I wonder, 'How did we lose?' If feels like everybody's competing, but I try to go back and look at some of the numbers, it's kind of confusing because I know everybody was playing hard. ... But we still lose."

Ayton, who leads NBA rookies with 12 double-doubles, will likely spend time guarding Lakers backup center Tyson Chandler, who played the past three seasons with the Suns and the first seven games of this season before he was bought out and signed with the Lakers.

Wouldn't call it a trap game, wouldn't say we can mail it in either. But this HAS to be a definitive W and we can get it easily by running our scorers at them, hitting some timely 3s and playing that improving defense that has won us some games this year. Their best player has a bad wheel and their second-leading scorer didn't play last game either, so their rhythm should be off. These Suns are going down "lol4:

Watching the replay after missing it live. We actually were down 17 from playing sloppy. We end up winning by 24!! We should beat The Suns. They aren’t that good. Add another win to the standings!!

The West is kind of weird this year, helped in no small part by the suddenly dysfunctional Warriors. If we keep quietly gelling, we can certainly sneak up on any of them.

Man Zo is one of the best defensive guards Ive seen. His footwork is soooo good.

Nice seeing Beasley get going and MO Wagner as well

What is funny about Zo's footwork is that it is perfect on defense, yet terrible when he attacks the rim.

Glad to see the team playing to its strengths the last two games, which is perimeter defense, rim protection and their transition game. Individually, Lonzo, KCP, Hart, Lance and even Rondo are excellent perimeter defenders, and BI and Kuz are joining that party. They need to in order to let end-of-prime LeBron play like old Kobe. It is important for his teammates to save LeBron's energy for the offensive end as much as possible. Learning each other's tendencies on defense is probably even ore difficult than learning each other's tendencies on offense.

Where I was disgusted a few games ago, but patient enough to wait until after the first trimester to hand out grades, I now see Magic's vision where he preached patience. He felt it would take until Christmas or so for the team to gel and he might be right. I'm excited to see Michael Beasley get minutes with the second unit and I hope it stays that way when Rondo returns. A center (either one), Beaz, Hart, KCP and Rondo should easily be one of the NBA's best second units. I'm also wondering if anything behind the scenes is brewing for December 15th, when the one year deal guys are tradable.

All-time classic scene in movie history. How hot was Katharine Ross in that movie?

I've been pretty miserable watching up until recently, but I'm beginning to see Magic's vision come into form. I've attended 3 home losses without a win, so maybe I'm bad luck this season because they have only lost 4 at home. Maybe that's what irks me a bit.
