GAME PREVIEW: PACERS AT LAKERS

by NBA.com

The Los Angeles Lakers will try to avoid losing three in a row for the first time since starting the season 0-3 when they host the Indiana Pacers on Thursday at Staples Center.

Los Angeles (11-9) had won nine of 11 before losing Sunday to the visiting Orlando Magic for the second time this season. The Lakers then went on the road and lost 117-85 to the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday, their most lopsided loss to the Nuggets in team history.

The Pacers (13-8) will be aiming for their third three-game winning streak of the season.

They opened their four-game West Coast trip with wins on back-to-back nights against the Utah Jazz (121-88) and Phoenix Suns (109-104) on Monday and Tuesday. The win against Utah was Indiana's largest margin of victory for a road game in 22 years.

The Lakers could be thin at point guard after Lonzo Ball sprained his ankle during the loss to the Nuggets and did not finish the game. Los Angeles is already without point guard Rajon Rondo, who sustained a broken hand on Nov. 15 and is about two weeks away from returning.

Ball told reporters after the loss in Denver that he planned to play Thursday, but Lakers coach Luke Walton said they're prepared to face the Pacers without a natural point guard.

"We have other guys that we trust, Brandon (Ingram), LeBron (James), that can play that for us, but they do other things for us too, so it's not ideal," Walton said.

Los Angeles has already struggled to defend the pick-and-roll against versatile centers and experienced point guards. Indiana has both in center Myles Turner and point guard Darren Collison, who played for UCLA.

Orlando center Nikola Vucevic had his two highest-scoring games of the season against the Lakers, totaling 36 points and 13 rebounds in a 130-117 win in Orlando on Nov. 17, and 31 points and 15 rebounds in the 108-104 win on Sunday.

Magic point guard D.J. Augustin, who averages 10.3 points and 5.4 assists, had a season-high 22 points and seven assists in the first meeting against the Lakers, and 12 points and nine assists in the second.

"Me and Myles have a good feel right now for the pick-and-roll," Collison told reporters after the win against the Suns. "We read each other. We kind of know when they switch, or when they're going to drop."

Lakers reserve shooting guard Lance Stephenson had his best run of the season while Ingram was suspended for four games last month for his involvement in an on-court fight with the Houston Rockets, but Stephenson has seen his minutes dwindle this month.

Stephenson should be motivated to do well against the Pacers, who drafted Stephenson in the second round in 2010. They kept Stephenson for four seasons before he turned down a five-year, $44 million contract and ended up signing a three-year, $27 million deal with the Charlotte Hornets in July 2014.

Stephenson would have been on the final year of his contract had he re-signed with Indiana, making about $8.8 million this season. Instead, he is on a one-year, $4.5 million deal with Los Angeles, and he is probably not in the Lakers' plans after this season.

You would think we would win this one considering Victor Oladipo is out but the Pacers are deep and have been playing well without him. The Pacers are one of the better teams in the league, I would say Top 8 and Sabonis has been beastly lately. The other night Sabonis had 21 Points and 16 Rebounds at Phoenix and that was off the bench, Turner had 16 Points and 13 Rebounds as well. Their Big's are really good. Although Oladipo has missed the last 5 games due to soreness in his knee, Tyreke Evens has been a nice fill in. Should be a fun game as these are my 2 favorite teams. I am off work tonight so I will be watching. I will be curious to see how many minutes Lance gets against his former team. We loved him here in Indy.

-Regarding more on the Lakers, the Lakers need a win badly, losing 3 straight will not be good. As far as I know everyone is a go for tonight's game as in LeBron, BI, Kuzma, and Ball. Ball injured his ankle at Denver the other night but says he will play last I heard.

We need 48 minutes of focused defense and taking care of the ball. I have given up on our free throw shooting; we are just going to have to win with hitting 65% - 75% of our free throws. There isn't one good free throw shooter on the entire team. Defense and get rid of the slop tonight fellers!

Defense is where it starts and please hit a few 3's. My concern tonight is Rebounding and containing Turner and Sabonis. Pacers have nasty Big's.

Game is on Fox Midwest here. I will get Pacers announcers but they are good announcers and not annoying like Spurs, Rockets, and Blazers announcers :waaaaa:, no BINGO either "lol4: . I will be disappointed if we lose this game considering Dipo is out.

Lakers up by a TD and 2 FG's early 13-0  Nice start by our Lakers. Jump on them early was one of my keys. Love the DEFENSE so far!

Couldn't ask for a better 1st QTR, EXCELLENT :kingclaphands:. Man we needed this! After the 1st QTR = Lakers 38 Pacers 15. I follow both teams closely and this is the best QTR the Lakers may have played all season and the worse the Pacers have played. :slamdunk:

Yep. Just what I said. FORTY EIGHT FUCKING MINUTES!!! We know we can't shoot threes. We know we can't hit free throws. BUT we CAN play defense and we CAN take care of the ball. We did just that and then FELL THE FUCK ASLEEP. This team has way too many holes. There is no way it is a playoff team without tweaks after December 15th. No banger at power forward. Moe Wagner isn't ready to be our stretch Sabonis. No shooters. We have LeBron and in the Western Conference, Old LeBron ain't gonna be enough and I don't care what his stats are. There, I vented. A blowout is becoming a probable loss tonight. Shit.

From 42-18 to 56-50. I was feeling so bold I screenshot it and put it on FB, then we gave up a 32-14 run. Bad karma I guess.

It's LeBron vs. Sabonis.

I know it's is enough to drive us all nuts. If the Lakers just had a Center like Sabonis we would be much better. It is driving me insane we didn't re-sign Randle.
