GAME PREVIEW: LAKERS AT PELICANS

by NBA.com

The New Orleans Pelicans traded Anthony Davis to the Los Angeles Lakers in the offseason, significantly changing the direction of both franchises.

The Lakers were eager to pair the six-time All-Star with LeBron James and immediately make Los Angeles a championship contender after a six-season absence from the playoffs. So far so good as the Lakers (15-2) have the best record in the NBA.

The Pelicans on the other hand were looking to the future and building around the three players they got from the Lakers -- Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart -- along with a slew of draft choices from L.A.

Throw in No. 1 overall draft pick Zion Williamson (though he's yet to play because of knee surgery) and a couple of other promising rookies and the future looks bright in New Orleans. But in the present, New Orleans is just 6-11 as it prepares to host Davis and the Lakers for the first time Wednesday night.

All three former Lakers have missed time because of injury, though each is expected to play Wednesday.

"It's going to be me against the Pelicans and then the three guys, if they play, against the Lakers, so it's going to be a great battle," Davis said. "Those guys are going to try to take our heads off just to prove a point, and I don't want to say I want to take their heads off. I just want to win it."

L.A. has won eight games in a row as it completes a four-game road trip two nights after a 114-104 victory at San Antonio on Monday.

"It's going to be different, obviously," Davis said. "I think you've got to embrace it. I know what the reaction's going to be. I try to look at all the guys who went and (returned to where they used to play), but it's unique, and I'm excited to go there and play for the first time with an opposing team, so it's going to be fun."

The Pelicans have a lot of new faces, but Alvin Gentry was Davis' coach for the final four of Davis' seven seasons in New Orleans and guard Jrue Holiday was his teammate for all but Davis' rookie season.

"I think seeing him in a different jersey will be cool," Holiday said after practice Tuesday. "He seems happy, so I'm happy."

The Pelicans have played better since a 1-7 start, winning four of their last seven games. They just finished a road trip that began in promising fashion with a victory at Phoenix, but then lost to the Jazz and the Clippers.

The Jazz jumped to a 28-9 lead and the Clippers led 40-27 at the end of the first quarter and built the lead to 62-37 during the second quarter.

A similar start would be even more difficult to overcome against James, Davis and the Lakers.

"AD is a great kid and a great player who plays on another team now," Gentry said. "The bottom line is we're getting ready to play against a really, really, really good basketball team. They have two great players and a lot of other guys who are very good, complementary players."

This game could shock us. Emotions will obviously be high and our castaways will be looking to sink our battleship. Count on AD getting neutralized and LeBronin Hood and his band of Merry Thieves having to steal the show. I'll miss the game on account of work but GO LAKERS -- we're on an impossible pace for 70 wins. :LOBtrophy:

This should be an entertaining game seeing some of the older teammates again and AD's first game back at New Orleans. I think we will win but I see it being close.

This will be a loss for all the reasons stated above. The LakeShow has already secured at least a 3-1 road trip record, so if ever they were ripe for a loss, it’s this game. Not trying to be GHE; just calling it like I see it. It’s just another “practice game” in “the long 82.”

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. I am out at moms now and off until Saturday. She cooked today so I just ate a huge plate of food = Turkey, Stuffing, Mash Potatoes, Green Beans. I am stuffed. Now I am in bed with Crown Royal in hand watching the end of this Lakers game. Lakers lead 104-102, another close one.

Lakers win again 114-110. Davis seals it at the line to go along with his 41 points. The final once again Lakers 114-110. 16-2 on the season now Brethren. What an impressive start to the season. Goodnight everyone.

This team has a huge Big 2 in LeBron and Davis and perfect chemistry. No LeBron team has ever started 16-2 to begin a season. Not in his Heat days or his Cavs days.

Kuzma gave the Lakers the lead for good when he hit a 3-pointer from the left corner with 1:07 to go, making it 111-109.

New Orleans trimmed it to 111-110 when Josh Hart hit one of two free throws, and after turnover by James as he was swarmed in the paint, JJ Redick had an open look from 3-point range for the lead that rimmed out. The Pelicans were forced to foul Davis, who missed one of two free throws, giving the Pelicans 5 seconds to run a play for the tie or lead. But that's when Davis sealed it, stepping in front of Brandon Ingram for his third steal.

Holiday had 29 points and 12 assists, and Ingram had 23 points and 10 rebounds for the Pelicans, who dropped their third straight game.

Trailing by as many as 16 in the third quarter, the Lakers began to take control with a 9-0 run to open the fourth, trimming New Orleans' lead to 89-88. Los Angeles tied the game at 91 on Kuzma's third 3.

I was GHE on this game too, Ken. But we seem to have the grit and guts to keep squeezing out these close victories - specifically on the road, too. First two paragraphs of a Laker Nation (website) recap of the game:

"The Los Angeles Lakers made the most of Anthony Davis’ first time back at the Smoothie King Arena by extending their winning streak to nine with a win over the New Orleans Pelicans.

The Los Angeles Lakers were unable to take advantage of a strong performance by Anthony Davis as his homecoming to the Smoothie King Center was spoiled by a loss to the New Orleans Pelicans."

We really have no weaknesses right now. Once Bradley comes back our defense will be better again as well. We have 2 guys in LeBron and Davis that can score 60 points together on any given night. That is like having Kobe and Shaq. We have Big's that can rebound and play defense well and we have a team that is clutch = winning every close game.
