GAME PREVIEW: RAPTORS AT LAKERS: Another public practice

by Harrison Faigen, @hmfaigen, silverscreenandroll.com

The Lakers clearly don’t care very much about the standings right now, or they at least don’t appear to be the team’s primary focus. Still, the team’s televised scrimmages actually do count for their record, and on that front, the Toronto Raptors should at least offer an opportunity to try and edge out the Dallas Mavericks in the race for the No. 5 seed.

Dallas capitalized on the Lakers’ recent loss by beating the Wizards to tie the Lakers in overall record (36-27), and now are in sole possessions of the fifth seed by virtue of winning the season series and owning the resulting tiebreaker. If the Lakers want to get back into fifth, they’ll have to beat Toronto on Sunday.

To give one a sense of where the Raptors are at, they were recently fined for (essentially) not coming up with a good enough excuse to rest their players and tank, so who they even make available for this one could be an adventure, especially after playing in Utah on Saturday night.

As for what to expect from the Lakers in this one, who the hell knows at this point. Maybe they’ll look better as they continue to work out the kinks in LeBron James’ second game back, or maybe they won’t. Maybe they’ll start trying on defense again, or maybe they won’t. I’m not gonna claim I can predict how this team is going to approach any given game this season anymore after the last several weeks.

At this point, all I can say for sure is that the Lakers and Raptors will tip off on Sunday at 7 p.m. PT at Staples Center. The game will be shown locally on Spectrum SportsNet and nationally on NBA TV. Try to stay sane, everyone.

Injury Report

- Both LeBron James (right ankle sprain) and Alex Caruso (back spasms) are being listed as questionable to play against Toronto.

- Kentavious Caldwell-Pope (right ankle sprain), Anthony Davis (right calf strain), Marc Gasol (volar plate fracture, left pinkie finger), Kyle Kuzma (left thumb sprain) and Dennis Schröder (left calf soreness) are all probable to play.

A win is needed here. Although I have looked at most of this season as the 'Practice Season' I am proud to say for the 1st time since 2010, you want to stay in the top 6 seeds so you avoid the playin games. As long as we finish 6th it is all good and we get healthy of course. We are currently a full game ahead of the Blazers who are at #7. Lakers are 36-27, Blazers are 35-28. It really doesn't matter who we play in round 1 as long as it isn't Utah and it won't be if we finish 5th or 6th. We will beat the Suns, Nuggets, Clippers, or Mavs in probably 6 games if we are 100% healthy I have no doubt about that.

Denver and Dallas have been the hottest, and we've been the worst - but it's as if it's being scripted for a Laker comeuppance . . Bron and AD are back. We have Diff'rent Strokes for the cheap muscle and MacBen for the 3s and the usual assortment of scallywags (KCP, Kuz, Trez, Schroed, Caruso etc. plus Gasol if he ever gets serious) so who is really going to beat us 4 out of 7?

Blazers won tonight so we need to win this, screw that playin stuff! The Nuggets are playing great right now but a lot of teams tend to do that in the regular season when they lose a great player. Losing Murray will deflate them come playoff time. Mavs have Luka but don't have enough to beat us in a series. Like I have been saying, Utah is really the only team that scares me in the West. Lets see if we can get this win tonight.

Drummond looks great early, 7 points already. Lakers lead early 14-12.

Drummond was a huge and necessary pickup because of not having Howard around this season. That was a beautiful touch pass by him to AD for the dunk. Lakers now lead 25-15 as Kuz drains the 3!

Kuzma looks great tonight, slammed one and then came back down and hit a 3. Lakers up 32-25.

Our defense is lackluster tonight, can't give up 72 points to the lowly Raptors in a half. Wow! We may have more problems that what I am thinking?? Down 72-59 to a short handed Raptors team at the half. What is going on? Lowry is playing like this game like it is a layup drill.

Pretty poor showing fella's. I am off work tonight and was looking forward to watching a full Lakers game with it being on NBA TV. Man we looked lethargic against a bad team. We are now in the 7th spot because the Blazers have the tiebreaker over us.

Balanced scoring but letting Siakam go for 39 and Lowry go for 37 is UNACCEPTABLE. If LeBron and AD were back to their normal selves, this would have been a win but the rest of the squad has lost its way. We have about 3 games left to find our true champion selves or this malaise may set in permanently.
