GAME PREVIEW: ROCKETS AT LAKERS

by NBA.com

The Los Angeles Lakers enter Thursday night's matchup against the visiting Houston Rockets looking like a team that has started to emerge from an emotional two weeks.

They scored 42 points in the fourth quarter of a 129-102 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday, with half of those points coming in the opening 3:31 of the period.

Staples Center was jumping again and players were rushing from the bench in joy after LeBron James hit five 3-pointers in a scoring flurry to start the final period.

When James went to the floor after making the fifth of those five triples, the bench took advantage of an ensuing timeout by the Spurs to rush across court and lift their captain from the court. There were cheers all around, smiles on faces and firm pats on the back for James.

"That's what we (are) all about, our team," James said afterward, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Anytime anyone's having success in the game, we cheer like it's our own. So having that camaraderie, having that brotherhood, even when they're beating you up, that's a pretty cool feeling."

Yet the death of Kobe Bryant and eight others in a helicopter crash Jan. 26 still resonated. The fan-generated memorial across the street was being removed Tuesday, while fans still chanted Bryant's name at times during the game.

The Lakers have won consecutive games, after also winning at Sacramento on Saturday, but they have gone just 5-4 in their past nine games going back to Jan. 15.

Thursday will be a chance for Rockets superstars James Harden and Russell Westbrook to pay their respects after Bryant's passing. Both grew up in the area and will be facing the Lakers in Los Angeles as teammates for the first time.

Harden enters off of two consecutive 40-point games, including Tuesday's 125-110 victory at home over the Charlotte Hornets. Westbrook did not play in that game due to a sprained thumb but is expected to play Thursday.

The Rockets started slow but used their own fourth-quarter burst to put away their opponent. Harden scored 14 points in the final period while the Rockets had 33 total.

"Heading to L.A. the next game, (Tuesday) was kind of a trap game where it could get you," Houston head coach Mike D'Antoni said. "But they understood what we were risking and came out at halftime and did the job."

It will be the Rockets' first game since acquiring forwards Robert Covington and Jordan Bell from the Minnesota Timberwolves. Clint Capela was moved to the Atlanta Hawks in Tuesday's four-team deal.

Harden and Westbrook did team up in a game at Los Angeles on Dec. 19, a 122-117 win over the Clippers. The Rockets faced the Lakers in Houston on Jan. 18 and fell 124-115 in the third game of their season-worst four-game losing streak.

After sitting out two games because of a thigh injury, Harden has scored 33.3 points per game over his last four contests.

Would love to know what went on behind the scenes with the Marcus Morris talks. Pissed the Logo got him for a bag of chips though. I hope a 3/D small forward wing materializes in the buyout market. As for Collison, IF he decides to hoop again, the Logo will snag him, too.

We were 3-3 in the 6 games preceding the disastrous tragedy of Jan. 26th. The Jan. 28th game against the Clippers was canceled. And we're 2-1 since then. Looking at the remaining schedule, we are going to be facing solid teams almost every night for the rest of the season. Will we fade and show our weaknesses, or will those teams come up against a well-coached, high fg% team that defends well and is hard to take down? This is our time. This is our chance to solidify our rotations, get clutch minutes from our bench, and convince ourselves and the NBA that we're as real as it gets.

The Clippers get Morris and Thomas (who will be waived) in Baldhead Ballmer's continuing quest to beat us . . .

"Lakers also had talks with the Knicks about Morris, sources told ESPN's Ramona Shelburne. New York insisted on getting Kyle Kuzma, Danny Green -- to make the money work -- and future second-round picks, a haul that the Lakers found to be too much. The Lakers pulled out of talks late."

. . . and Iguodala decides to take his talents to South Beach. All good. I'm ready for Boogie to re-emerge as the x-factor that will help us be the best defensive team in the playoffs.

Analysts are still picking the Clippers to win it all.

I hope Vogel takes that personally.

Rockets hustling us with small ball and 3s . . Kuzma is garbage, letting Westbrook run layup drills on him. I'm beginning to doubt whether we did good by keeping him, and I know I'm not the only fan who feels this way. He looks tentative and lost on offense and a step behind on defense.

We SHOULD be able to wear these guys down in the second half, but Harden and Westbrook are never easy.

Offensive Foul on Beard, I love it. Throw your body into someone it eventually catches up to you. Great call. Lakers still hold a 108-105 lead.

Good grief, Covington turns into Reggie Miller. Lakers lose a tough one 121-111. Still 38-12 through 50 games but a disappointing loss. Our 3 point defense tonight was bad.

Getting our hats handed to us. This is what the playoffs will look like vs. these younger, faster small-ball teams. Too many 4th quarter turnovers for LeBron. Credit the Rockets for sustaining that energy for 48 minutes and splashing all those threes.

We gave up too many 3's. Bad defense. Covington was wide open on 2 of those.

That is Mike D's teams, they live and die by the 3 and they were nailing them tonight. Westbrook gives that team a guy that can penetrate and score too. When they are not making 3's though they are an average team, when they make 3's they are hard to beat.

The NBA will figure this shit out. I disagree with Frank Vogel's approach last night, but what do I know. He played right into their hands.

FWIW, I am 2-4. That's right, the Lakers lose when I go to the games this year. I had a better record last season. Oy.
