GAME PREVIEW: PELICANS AT LAKERS

by NBA.com

The New Orleans Pelicans visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday in the second meeting of the season between the two clubs that engaged in a blockbuster trade last summer.

Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball and Josh Hart will face the Lakers for the first time at Staples Center since they were shipped to New Orleans for Anthony Davis. The two teams met on Nov. 28, when the Lakers captured a 114-110 win in New Orleans behind Davis' 41 points.

Both teams appear to have benefitted from the deal so far, but Davis' addition has turned the Lakers into one of the NBA's top clubs.

He scored 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as the Western Conference leaders held off a furious rally by the visiting Phoenix Suns in a 117-107 win for their third consecutive victory Wednesday. LeBron James recorded his eighth triple-double, with 31 points, 13 rebounds and 12 assists to help the Lakers avoid an embarrassing defeat.

Kyle Kuzma, who opened the new year as a blond, added 19 points and Avery Bradley finished with a season-high 18 points for the Lakers.

Los Angeles led by as many as 36 in the first half and were up by 22 heading into the fourth quarter before Phoenix cut the deficit to seven with about two minutes remaining. However, a layup and some clutch free throws by James clinched the win for the Lakers.

"We stopped playing on both ends of the floor," said Davis, who managed just two points in the final quarter. "We started playing a lot of one-of-one. We completely stopped playing defense. ... We turned the ball over. It's good we got the win but we can't allow ourselves to fall into a trap like that."

Said James: "You always have to be engaged until the clock hits zero."

Ball delivered his best game of the season Sunday, when the Pelicans rolled to a 127-112 victory over the Houston Rockets, who were without James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Clint Capela.

Ball had 27 points, 21 of those coming on a career-high seven 3-pointers, and 10 assists. Ingram also scored 27, while Jrue Holiday added 25 as the Pelicans won for the fifth time in six games after ending a 13-game skid.

"I know it wasn't gonna happen overnight," said Ball, who altered his shooting stroke last summer, according to NOLA.com. "This is a new shot for me. I'll stay in the gym and keep improving it over time."

Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry noted Ball's dedication into becoming a more consistent shooter from long distance.

"He's put a lot of work into his 3-point shooting. I mean a lot of work," said Gentry after the Houston win, according to NOLA.com. "Before practice. After practice. You saw the results tonight. He did a great job of getting his feet set and shooting the 3s. I was really happy with the pace he had us playing. Rebounding the ball. Pushing the ball. Dribble penetration."

Ingram has enjoyed a breakout campaign, averaging 25.3 points per game. He averaged 18.3 points per game in 52 games last season with the Lakers.

30-11 at the halfway point would = great (on pace to win 60) but we may even have 32 or so wins at the halfway point in reality which is better. Just need to keep LeBron and AD healthy as the season moves along and beat the teams we should beat. We should win this one pretty easily to get win 28.

No Caruso tonight and Lonzo has been playing well recently. I would almost rather see us lose some games against teams we should beat, but beat the great teams consistently.

Nah we have no business losing to this crap team. We should always beat teams that are way below .500. Playing down to your competition is a bad habit. Having said that I would love to see us beat the Clippers once.

Example: The Colts aren't in the playoffs this year because they lost games to teams like the Dolphins and Jags who suck. Every game counts. Colts win those games they are 9-7 and playing this weekend as a 6th seed. You simply have to beat the teams you are supposed to beat or you aren't going anywhere in basketball, baseball, or football. Cubs lost to a lot of scrub teams last season and it cost them dearly.

I don't disagree, but I'd rather absorb a loss to the Pellies and beat the Nuggets or Clippers if I had a choice. That is all I am saying.

First two touches for Rondo slip through his hands. Next possession he holds it too long. Calling all Collisons! Calling all Collisons! But ya still a big lead....for now

Unless I am missing something, he appears to be through. I just hope that this Collison rumor is true and that Rob Pelinka has the balls to waive Rondo.

Danny Green (who I will henceforth refer to as "Bill Bixby") had a HULK SMASH MOMENT finally with a Kobe-esque 25/5/5 game! Speaking of Kobe, B. Ingram really had a volume shooter's night, chucking up 27 shots to get his measly 22 points while his teammate Lonzo had a much more efficient night - making as many baskets on 11 less attempts and outscoring Ingram by one point (Why is Redick on this sorry-ass team? Can we make one more "basketball reasons" trade with New Orleans to get him?).

Anyway . . AD got OFF from all over the court and we didn't need Kuz to do much - I wonder if he's got some lingering injury issue they're trying to keep under wraps . . meanwhile halfway through the 3rd, LeBron had 9 points, ONE rebound and THIRTEEN assists. At game's end he had 17, 8 and 15 for a near-triple-double. The guy's incredible - he's using in-game load management dishing assists instead of looking to score which is great, except giving up 20-point leads and not being able to rely on the bench drives his minutes up.

Oh well. Another "forget that 4-game losing streak" win and we're getting prettier and prettier. Vogel's lordsmanship and LeBron's on-court coaching make us the most formidable team in the Assoc. and everyone - Clips and Bucks included - know it. If we can just get Kuz up to snuff and the rest of the bench/role players locked in on executing like champions, we are looking like #17 coming up strong.

Back to a season high 21 games above .500 at 28-7. We lost 4 in a row and just made up for it with 4 wins in a row. Pelicans suck, the best thing we ever did was trade them Ingram and Ball. Look at our team now and our team when we had them.
