GAME PREVIEW: 76ERS AT LAKERS

by NBA.com

The Los Angeles Lakers and visiting Philadelphia 76ers could be near full strength when they meet for the first time this season on Tuesday.

Four-time NBA Most Valuable Player LeBron James is on the verge of returning from a 16-game absence because of a groin injury sustained against the Golden State Warriors on Christmas.

James, who leads the Lakers in scoring (27.3) and rebounding (8.3) and is second in assists (7.1), began taking part in full-contact practices over the weekend. The Lakers are 6-10 without him.

Second-leading scorer Kyle Kuzma (19.1) sat out a 116-102 win against the visiting Phoenix Suns on Sunday evening with a sore hip, but he should be ready to return against Philadelphia.

The 76ers have been short-handed the past three games and were severely overmatched in a 126-110 loss to the Nuggets in Denver on Saturday night.

Philadelphia was missing its top two scorers, center Joel Embiid (27.2) and shooting guard Jimmy Butler (19.0), as well as starting small forward Wilson Chandler.

All three are expected back against the Lakers, however.

Embiid took Saturday night off to rest after experiencing back tightness in previous games, giving him six days off before playing Los Angeles. He recorded his career high of 46 points in a 115-109 win against the Lakers at Staples Center on Nov. 15, 2017.

Embiid missed the highly anticipated matchup against Denver 7-footer Nikola Jokic, but he'll be up against a young Lakers center who is building confidence. Ivica Zubac had 24 points and a career-high 16 rebounds against the Suns, and he has reached double figures in points in five straight games for the first time in his three-year career.

"You're going to get little chances here and there, and you've got to show your coaches you deserve more," Lakers coach Luke Walton said. "Every time we play him, he keeps playing at a high level."

Butler has missed the past three games with a sore right wrist. He saw a specialist in Los Angeles on Friday and was diagnosed with a sprain. Chandler has been bothered by left hamstring tightness and sat out against the Nuggets, his team the past six seasons.

"If we needed this game, like it was a playoff run or something like that, I could have played easily," Chandler told reporters afterward.

The 76ers had been building momentum all month until running into the Nuggets.

The last time they were at full strength, they posted a decisive 120-96 win Jan. 17 at the Indiana Pacers, who are one spot ahead of the 76ers in third place in the Eastern Conference.

Philadelphia then lost to the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder for the 19th straight time as Butler missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer in the 117-115 defeat, but they rebounded without Butler to post wins last week against the Houston Rockets and San Antonio Spurs, two more teams that currently hold playoff spots.

The 76ers were 9-3 in January before running into the Nuggets, the No. 2 team in the Western Conference standings.

"You look forward to moving on, getting the guys healthy and continuing on with our season," Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said.

This will be the first meeting between the teams since Dec. 7, 2017, when Lakers forward Brandon Ingram made a 3-pointer in the final second for a 107-104 win, ending a five-game losing streak.

The teams will also play Feb. 10 in Philadelphia.

The Sixers are very talented, this will be a tough game. My gut is telling me that we will trade for Anthony Davis and get a deal done. Stephen A Smith and Bill Plaschke both think it will get done FWIW. I seen them talking about it on the Stephen A show. On my way into work, I heard on the radio Chris Broussard was saying Klay Thomspon wants to stay with the Warriors but also said if the Lakers trade for Davis that he would consider playing with LeBron and Davis and sign with the Lakers this summer. All rumors but just what I have heard today from 3 guys that cover Basketball 24/7.

On a day when Grammy-winning classic 80s singer James Ingram dies, his namesake Brandon Ingram is single-handedly keeping us close. Trades a-poppin.

Came out flat! 39-20 after the 1st Qtr. Still down 64-53 at Half. I actually wonder what the Pelicans would take for Davis? It may take Kuzma, Ingram, Zubac, and Hart to get a deal done? At least we would still have Lonzo to go with LeBron and Davis. LeBron is 34 and getting older, we need someone like Davis who is young at 25 and a legit Superstar to be the face of the franchise for the next 10 years. Then go all in for Klay this summer. That would be a true dangerous Big3 that do different things well. Lonzo may blossom playing with 3 guys like that. Fill the rest of the Roster with shooters and role players next season.

Without Davis tonight, the Pelicans beat the Rockets at Houston, Jahlil Okafor had 27 Points and 12 Rebounds. CP3 even played and Harden had 37. This season has been strange.

Lakers down 88-75 late in the 3rd Qtr, Ingram has 30 tonight but nobody else is doing anything.

Right now it is just tough to figure out where this team is headed and what the Roster may look like by years end and heading into next season. That has people disinterested in the team + we are a .500 team and currently not in the Playoffs which doesn't help matters. There are some Lakers fans that just can't get use to LeBron especially the people who worship Kobe, others do not like Ball and think he is overhyped. Being a longtime Lakers fan, I will still watch and be interested but I hope we get Anthony Davis in reality. This fanbase needs something to get real excited about again. Signing LeBron was exciting but he needs help or we aren't winning a Title with him.

I do not think it is so much being fairweather when one has doubt about the teams direction. Like with the Colts for example, once Peyton left they still had direction by drafting Luck which gave the fans in Indy excitement. It got side tracked for a couple of years because he got injured and had a bad GM and Coach. Now Luck is healthy again and had an MVP type of season with a GM that doesn't have his head up his ass and a Coach that knows Offense. Colts will win a SB within the next 3 years with the GM and Coach we have now. I am glad Irsay figured it out. We were in the Final 8 this season in a rebuild season. Luck is healthy now. Magic needs to trade for or sign another Superstar to go with LeBron otherwise we aren't winning a Championship and it is obvious to me.

I went last night. The first quarter was an embarrassment, but I suppose if every player on the team thinks he is going to get traded, they aren't exactly going to come out like gangbusters. It was nice to see them turn things around and go on that 16-0 run and to see Brandon Ingram play great in his rivalry against Ben Simmons. Man is Embiid GREAT! Anyway, I hope the guy who supposedly "dodged a bullet," yet has missed 17 games, returns tomorrow and we bring the same energy we brought after that abominable start. TAKE CARE OF THE BALL, GUYS! Yeesh.

I'm absolutely certain that Earvin "Magic" Johnson agrees with you!

A little unrelated, 3Peat, but since you find a way to mention the Colts and Peyton in almost every post :snapout: :waaaaa: , did you see Jared Goff talking about how he grew up idolizing Peyton? He even dressed up as him for Halloween. If he can pull a Nick Foles and beat Brady, he'll join Discount Double-Check as a SB-winning Cal Bears QB. Joe Kapp, Craig Morton and Vince Ferragamo (also an LA Ram) also played for the Bears and appeared in a SB/NFL championship, but didn't win - no other school has more than three alums that made it to the Big Game.

Yeah, Magic knows what it takes to win obviously that is for sure. So far I think he has done a good job. Lets see if he can get another Superstar to come here?
