GAME PREVIEW: LAKERS AT QUEENS

by NBA.com

SACRAMENTO -- The Los Angeles Lakers revert to life without LeBron James when they visit the Sacramento Kings on Thursday night.

James suffered a strained groin during the Lakers' impressive 127-101 road win over the Golden State Warriors in the NBA's Christmas Day showcase game.

An MRI on Wednesday showed no structural damage, and the Lakers formally labeled their star day-to-day.

They did so as James was boarding a flight back to Los Angeles, after his teammates had headed north to Sacramento for Thursday's game. He will not play.

"I take a lot of pride in (staying healthy)," James insisted to reporters after the game. "It's more than anything being available to my teammates, to my coaching staff -- that is something I take more personal than anything. Hopefully it is not a long thing and I can get back on the floor as soon as possible."

James has not been ruled out of Friday's home game against the Los Angeles Clippers. The Kings visit Los Angeles for a rematch Sunday.

The Lakers will take the court in Sacramento with a 20-14 record. They didn't win their 20th game last season until Feb. 2 while James played for Cleveland.

James' absence will be his first of the season. He played all 82 games for the first time in his career last season.

At age 33, James ranks among the Top 10 in the NBA in minutes played (1,178) this season.

James had 25 points in 31 minutes when the Lakers won 101-86 in an earlier trip to Sacramento last month. Rajon Rondo had six points, seven assists, two steals and a game-best plus-17 plus/minus in a matchup with his old team.

Rondo led the league in assists at 11.7 per game to go with 11.9 points in his one season in Sacramento in 2016.

He hasn't had more than six points or seven assists in any of his five returns since.

Rondo played a key role in Wednesday's win at Golden State, recording 15 points and 10 assists.

He made six of his 11 shots as the Lakers connected on 55.3 percent from the field and 13 of 33 on 3-pointers in the one-sided win.

Rondo will also miss this game with a sprained finger. JaVale McGee made the trip and is listed as questionable to play. He has missed 4 games with pneumonia, but third year center, 21 year old Ivica Zubac has stepped up in a starting role in his absence. If Zubac starts, The Lakers could start all five members of its young core .. Zubac, Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and Kykle Kuzma .. for the first time.

The Kings will be playing their second game in two nights, having visited the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

Sacramento gave playing time to all 13 players, none for more than 30 minutes, in a 127-118 loss than ended a two-game winning streak.

The Kings are three games into a nine-game stretch in which they don't leave the state of California. They cross the state line just once -- to Phoenix -- between Dec. 17 and Jan. 17.

While Kings fans will be denied a second chance to see James this season, star guard De'Aaron Fox said he believes the club gave the faithful a bit of a Christmas present in 122-117 victory over New Orleans in their most recent home game Sunday.

"These fans do a great job of coming out each and every night and supporting us," he gushed after the win. "We owe them something special, man, and our main goal is to try to get to the playoffs. They get loud and crazy, and I just can't wait to see how much more crazy they can get."

No LeBron, no Rajon, no JaVale. We still have a squad that can get it done vs. Sacramento. Defense is the key to victory, as we can't simply out-shoot this team on their home court (although we did pretty well against the Warriors in that regard). You already know who I'm looking at to have a big impact offensively and get his teammates good looks - though Kuz, Hart and Ingram can all create for themselves. Of those three, Kuz is probably the catch-and-shoot guy and we'll need his size in the paint as well if we want to win the battle of the boards. Chandler and Zubac gotta be active as well, as our transition game was huge against the Warriors and should be our focus tonight.

Let's show the league - and the Pacific Division - that we are nothing to fool with and are as real as it gets! If LeBron is recruiting another superstar to play alongside him in L.A., it begs the question "who will we lose?" but for now it's our young core that represents us and could very well be the ones who take us as deep into the playoffs as we can go.

Pretty sure JaVale made the trip and is "questionable," but it wouldn't surprise me if he was held out one more game, especially considering Zu's recent play.

HAVING SAID THAT, the two guys who have had chemistry with Zu have been LeBron and Rondo, so we'll see if Zo has chemistry executing the screen-roll with him. It will be interesting to see whether Ingram or Lonzo take over organizing the offense in the half court tonight. My guess is that Luke will give Zo that opportunity and have Ingram come off the wing. I really hope we see a Zo, Zu, Kuz, BI, Hart starting lineup tonight. Expect a dose of Svi tonight, too. Time for him to start stroking it like he did in Garbage Time the other night. The Young Core will be on display!

"Ingram, 21, is averaging 15.5 points, 4 rebounds and 2.2 assists in the 23 games he has played this season. He missed 11 games because of a sprained ankle and the suspension he served for his role in a melee versus the Houston Rockets.

Last season, as a second-year player, he averaged 16.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists while shooting 39 percent from 3-point range, compared to just 31 percent from 3 this year.

Yet last season the Lakers didn't win their 20th game until Feb. 2. This season, they secured it Christmas Day with a rousing 127-101 victory over the Golden State Warriors. That is to say, if Ingram's personal stats have suffered at all, it has come in the spirit of winning games."

ESPN article today on Ingram stepping his game up "like he did last year" specifically when *cough* was out injured and Ingram played some point. Not one mention of *cough* in the whole article.

Young core getting buckets - if Zubac can get his and our defense kicks in, we can get this W. The Kings are a team we should be able to beat without LeBron. Gonna need Hart, KCP and Lance to flex their muscles too.

So far, Zo good. Long way to go tonight, but the young’ns don’t lack confidence.

Kuz with 23 at Halftime. What an all-time steal in the Draft that was by Magic. 67-61 Lakers lead at Half.
