GAME PREVIEW: LAKERS AT SPURS

by NBA.com

If the first three games this season between the San Antonio Spurs and the Los Angeles Lakers are any indication, the fourth year's fourth and final dustup should be a real doozy as well.

The new look Spurs and Lakers wrap of their season series on Friday at the AT&T Center in San Antonio.

The teams played Wednesday in Los Angeles, with the Lakers rallying for a 121-113 victory behind LeBron James' 42 points, and will be done with each other until at least the playoffs if both can find enough success to make the postseason in the uber-competitive Western Conference.

San Antonio won the first two meetings of the season, but both squads are already plenty different from those first two matchups -- as the Lakers' victory on Wednesday illustrated. Los Angeles' youthful core is acclimating to James' do-everything style with a different player stepping into the limelight beside James each game.

That was the case on Wednesday when James scored 14 straight points over a four-and-a-half-minutes stretch of the fourth quarter to propel the Lakers (15-9) to the win. He ended up with 20 of his 42 points in the final period.

"It's the fourth quarter, and my teammates look at me to make plays," James said. "I put that type of pressure on my back. I love my teammates giving me that responsibility. That was the result of it tonight."

Kyle Kuzma had 22 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Lakers, who've won four straight games.

Lonzo Ball had 14 points, nine assists and four rebounds for Los Angeles, who was without Brandon Ingram for most of the game after he sprained his left ankle in the first quarter.

Ingram had X-rays that were negative, but he did not return to the game. He was on crutches after the game with his ankle was wrapped in black tape, but was able to walk some on his own.

"There is no timetable or anything like that yet," Lakers coach Luke Walton said about Ingram's availability for Friday's game. "But (the trainers) said he got it pretty good."

The game was the second of a road back-to-back for the Spurs, who lost 139-105 in Utah on Tuesday in what was their third defeat in their past four outings, with all the losses coming by 30 or more points.

"Our defense is definitely our main focus," San Antonio guard DeMar DeRozan said. "We've got to pick that up. We need to win quarters defensively, not letting guys score 25-plus points. We have to understand that when we have bad quarters scoring, we can rely on our defense to keep their scoring at a minimum."

DeRozan had 32 points to lead the Spurs (11-14) in Wednesday's loss while Rudy Gay had a season-high 31 points before fouling out in the final minute and LaMarcus Aldridge hit for 21.

"This sucks like hell to lose, especially when everybody is fighting so hard," DeRozan said. "Luck is going to go our way. Everything is going to go our way. We've got to say positive and understand that as long as we keep at it, the basketball gods are going to turn in our favor."

San Antonio has lost four out of its past five games. Friday's contest will be the first of a six-game homestand for the Spurs between now and Dec. 17.

Luke's had a day to prepare the rotations, which is a big deal. We won't see Pau again tonight with his stress fracture, so Luke knows exactly who he's playing against and I'm sure the defensive schemes for both Rudy Gay and DeMar DeRozan will be different. Hopefully Josh Hart won't get picked on by the fucking refs again and I would love to not only see KCP get more PT, but I think he should start. He's been shooting the three a lot better, playing better defense with more confidence and he is literally the ONLY player on the team who can hit a fucking free throw! The Spurs are favored by a point, but I would love to see us go into their building and control the game. Even without BI and Rondo, a 9 man rotation of Lonzo, KCP, LeBron, Kuz, Javale, Hart, Lance, Beaz and Chandler should be just fine, as long as Luke staggers LeBron and Lonzo a bit. If both guys play 40 minutes and we win, that's fine, too.

I love Ball's game actually. I know the Rev calls him GoofBall but his passing ability and Defense is so overlooked. He has great footwork too. I guess in a shooting contest I may even be able to out shoot him (just kidding, I aint beating no pro at 47 and a beer belly) but you get my point as alot of people are critical of his shooting. BI looks like he will be out for a while but I love the Kuz and Hart is Good. We will be fine. When in doubt if we are struggling we could always call on Lance :slamdunk:

Lonzo's unique. He sets the tone on defense and should be a candidate for an all-defense team this season. His instincts at that end of the court are uncanny and he is great at staying in front of his man, although the real quick pipsqueaks seem to give him fits at times. He's one of the better rebounding guards in the entire NBA. On offense, he is still the best player on the team in starting a fastbreak, especially when he grabs the rebound. In the half court set, he is deferring to LeBron, setting great screens for him and otherwise taking what the defense gives him. For people who want him to be Damian Lillard or Steph Curry, too bad. He'll never be that. I expect his three point percentage to improve as he matures and his ability to finish to improve, but I think his eventual scoring average will peak at about 13-15 ppg. I love him. There's no point guard in the NBA quite like him right now. Jason Kidd remains the best comparison, but I don't think Lonzo will score as much as Kidd scored and with this squad, he doesn't need to.

He does need to score, and with BI and Rondo out, it's kind of like a silver lining. Kidd developed his shot in spots and became a "low" trip-dub machine. 12/10/11, stuff like that. With more confidence he can be dangerous with the ball like LeBron, Kidd and Magic.

Odd that we've completed our season series so early. Who scheduled that?

Another great game between these two teams. Too bad it's the last one of the season unless they meet in the playoffs, which is doubtful, but who knows. It's not out of the question that they could finish with the #4 and #5 seed. Anyway, I don't have the same feeling I had the other night. LeBron hasn't had much rest and he's looking tired right now with about 5 to go. We'll see. Spurs up by 3.

Why is Luke going small? Interesting. He hasn't done that very much recently.

Oh well. Can't expect LeBron to bail is out every night. We could have used Ingram tonight. DeRozan is feasting. This one is in the proverbial icebox with a back-to-back with the red hot Grizzlies tomorrow.

Homecourt pride and comfort for them, mixed with us not knowing how to play team defense. We are a .500 team disguised as a probable playoff contender.

Just woke up and see we lost. I missed the game. Looks like they blew us off the court in the 4thQTR. The Lakers and Pacers both are 15-10 through 25 games LOL. That is a 60% winning %.
