GAME PREVIEW: SPURS AT LAKERS

by NBA.COM

The Los Angeles Lakers will be shorthanded when they host the San Antonio Spurs at Staples Center on Monday night.

Brandon Ingram and Rajon Rondo were ejected after throwing punches in a 124-115 loss to the visiting Houston Rockets on Saturday night, overshadowing the home debut of LeBron James. Ingram will serve a 4 game suspension and Rondo will serve a 3 game suspension.

Rondo is the starting point guard for the Lakers and Ingram the starting small forward.

James didn't want to dwell on the incident, but rather how the Lakers (0-2) could get better moving forward.

"When you wake up (Sunday), it's a new day," James said. "It's a new opportunity and you leave things in the past and get on with the future."

The Spurs (1-1) are also working a new superstar into their lineup.

DeMar DeRozan was traded in July from the Toronto Raptors to the Spurs in a deal that sent Kawhi Leonard to Toronto.

DeRozan, a Los Angeles-area native, is already having a positive impact with his new team, scoring 28 points in each of his first two games.

The Spurs played Saturday night at the Portland Trail Blazers and lost 121-108. The Lakers lost 128-119 at Portland in their season opener on Thursday.

San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich told the Express-News that DeRozan has settled in nicely.

"He's absorbed everything we've given him so far, knowing full well it's a new system," Popovich said. "It will take some time for him to feel totally comfortable, but he's highly intelligent. It's the NBA, it's not rocket science so he's picking it up pretty quickly."

The Lakers won all three meetings against the Spurs last season, their first sweep of San Antonio since the 1997-98 season. The Spurs have lost four in a row to the Lakers altogether.

Ingram missed the final two games against the Spurs last season with injuries, but he scored 26 points in a 93-81 win at Staples Center on Jan. 11. Kyle Kuzma would be a strong candidate to slide into the starting lineup if Ingram is suspended.

Kuzma, one of the team's leading scorers last season at 16.1 points, is off to slow start, shooting 10-for-28 from the floor in the first two games. He shot 45 percent from the floor during his rookie year last season.

Lonzo Ball, a starter at point guard most of last season, would likely move into a starting spot if Rondo is suspended. Ball shot 36 percent from the floor in his rookie year last season. He's 7-for-17 through two games this month.

Two players who are off to impressive starts for Los Angeles are second-year shooting guard Josh Hart and veteran forward JaVale McGee.

Hart is averaging 15.5 points and shooting 52 percent from the floor, and McGee is averaging 14.5 points and shooting 70.6.

All in all, James is content with where his team sits after two games.

"Not disappointed at all," he told reporters after the loss to Houston. "Understand that we are going to have some struggles, some early struggles, and nobody said it was going to be easy."

We can definitely absorb the loss of Ingram and Rondo - it will give Lonzo, Hart, Kuzma, LeBron and a few others more minutes and time to shine. This game should be played with a MUST WIN mentality, and with a defense that shows we are trying to limit teams UNDER 30 PER QUARTER :imok: . Win each quarter, MAKE SOME 3S :snapout: and let's show DeRozan how we do things downtown!!!

Lakers:

-26 with Lonzo on the floor so far this season.
+8 when he's on the bench.

 I'm certain that will change as Lonzo gets starter's minutes and begins to get loose.

Lonzo was our best +/- guy last season. He "starts" to shine tonight! Had a great game the other night though IMO. I like that LeBron will get to play some small forward tonight. This lineup should be a better rebounding lineup. We'll see.

Rondo takes ball out of Ingram and Brons hands which hurts the team

Zo is even more of a natural passer. He doesnt probe in the half court.

Hope to get some Svi

Robert is back! At least you BETTER be back!!!

Beaz and Svi will likely replace BI and Rondo in the rotation unless Luke wants to match Pau and Aldridge's length, in which case we'll see some Zubac tonight.

Interesting observation about Rondo, although I see him as an overall positive. We'll see.

Sup Laker fams.

Ingram IMO hasn’t been aggressive enough. A bit slow to develop his shot. I’m not sold that he’s a sure thing! There I said it. Hope I am wrong.
Rondo’s savant title is overstated. But he’s definitely a plus. Got a little lazy with careless passes the last couple games.

So.......

Blessing in disguise?

Zo should start. Shit or get off the pot. He’ll get better then we can trade him or not.

Kuz is a starter some day. But for now he can be a valuable off the bench asset.

Go Lakeshow!

I like Lonzo starting but we still may miss not having Rondo tonight. I am not sure what to think of Ingram at this point? He has Great potential but so far is far from a great player. He's young though so I still have patience with him. Very winnable game tonight.

Jesus is in the house! We need some Ws and they will come.

Yes, the very beginning of the season is somewhat frustrating and we are sick of losing. I think this team will glue together by mid-season, BI will bust out, as will Zo and Kuz, but yes I am frustrated right now.

Nice to see Kuz say "fuck this, I'm sick of this shit! Time to go to work!" Hopefully he can keep it going and LeBron has a big second half (as well as everyone else!)

Once again, their 3s vs. ours and lack of defense against their big guns is what's killing us. Our wins will come when those two issues are addressed. This is a new NBA, and LeBron better learn fast.
