GAME PREVIEW: NUGGETS AT LAKERS

by Darius Soriano, Forum Blue & Gold

Remember back on July 1st when LeBron James chose the Lakers in free agency? Remember the exuberance? The questioning of if it was even really real? Then, the realization that LeBron was actually going to suit up for the Lakers?

Well, that day is here. LeBron is going to play in his first NBA game wearing that forum blue and gold #23 jersey for the first time and I can barely contain myself. I know it’s only preseason. That the game, in the big picture doesn’t matter. That he’s likely to barely play at all. So what. SO WHAT.

This game is also going to be sloppy. The Lakers, as they did last season, have focused almost entirely on defense and while they have slowly been adding more to their offensive playbook over the first few days of camp, I don’t expect things to look smooth on that side of the ball.

As Luke Walton has stated several times already, this group is brand new and is starting from scratch in a lot of ways. Yes, the young players who are holdovers have been in this system, but new roles and a group of veterans mean a new mix, which means finding a new chemistry and new ways for everything to fit as it should.

There are things to watch for, however. Will Lonzo Ball play? Will the confidence Ingram’s been displaying in his media availability translate to the court? How much run will Kuzma get as the nominal Center? What does the rotation look like? Can Hart continue to look like the player he was in summer league? Will Svi hit 90% of his shots or just decide hitting 100% is the way to go?

I’m also interested in seeing how JaVale looks (assuming he’s the starter) as a defensive anchor and rim rolling lob threat, whether Zubac can carry over his strong play from his national team to the Lakers, whether the “new and improved” KCP is a real thing or just a media day talking point, and how Rondo, Lance, and Beasley fare in their first games as Lakers.

That’s nearly every player on the roster, but that’s the point isn’t it? The Lakers are back and whether it’s a preseason game or not matters less than at 6:30pm I’m going to turn on the TV and watch this new squad play and actual NBA game. Praise the basketball gods. We’re back, you guys.

Hey Moos - what was once a collection of dozens of die-hard Laker fans has dwindled down to a scant few of us, but we do try to check in here before every game! The past few years have proven that even the most loyal of fans fall off and become hyper-critical when the Lakers aren't winning. We really had some crazy theories and perspectives coming from our former ESPN Laker Page cohorts and, though the fun and jokes are missed, the outlandish and negative commentary are not.

This site is not easy to register for and join - we had to put restrictions up to avoid the tons of spam "zombies" that kept attacking - or else we'd likely have more members in here. Perhaps now that we are over the worst stretch of basketball in Laker history, we'll see some more activity and possibly add a few more members. I've tried to add a few but they either couldn't register or just never got in the habit of posting. We've torpedoed a couple members as well :fanshithit: . Hopefully we see more of L4L/Craig, NYC/Jesus, Nuggs and Robert - the only others who have posted in recent months.

In any case, glad you are in L.A. - I will eventually make my way down there (I have family and friends in the area) and would love to meet up for a game if possible! It's going to be absolutely surreal to see LeBron (and Rondo, Lance, Beasley and JaVale) in a Lakers jersey, but if we are in the lead when the clock reads 0:00, the changes will be more than welcome. After years of bad-mouthing LeBron (and, to a degree, Rondo, JaVale and Lance as well), I and many other Laker fans are going to have to learn to cheer him on and hope that his 15-year run of almost perfect health continues, because without him our playoff chances severely decrease.

All that having been said, let's get ready to root for our team as currently constructed and enjoy this unique and exciting season! :boozbuds:

Looking good so far . . a little sloppy. We're going to need better play from the 5 than JaVale can provide, but with LeBron, Kuzma and our two young centers, hopefully Luke can get some good defensive presence. Maybe that's our mid-season move, a top-notch center ready to move ala Pau Gasol in '08?

Denver is a solid team, great ball movement and spacing. Isaiah Thomas will give them a great chance to make the playoffs, and we will likely have to prove ourselves against this team during the season and possibly the playoffs. (ATTENTION: I didn't realize that beginning this season, the shot clock will reset to only 14 SECONDS on offensive rebounds.)

Came out on fire in the 3rd! Nuggets cooled off too, damn they can shoot. It's gonna be a couple months for this thing to really take shape.

Nuggets are shooting the lights out, and we look very rough. Lots of film on this one. Denver looks sharp, like they're ready for the regular season. It seems like there are 7 or 8 of them on the floor, the way they've rebounded and rotated to the open shooter.

Ingram looks good. That is really nice to see! I don't care about wins/losses in Pre-Season but how guys look, what kind of shape their in, etc.. Ingram looks legit.

I recorded the game and watched it when I got home last night. I did that a lot last season and will do so again this season, so there probably won't be much in game posting by me.

Where's Craig? Robert? Nuggz? Jesus? We finally have something to talk about!

Not much to take away from last night other than the additions of LeBron and Rondo will be huge, the absence of Julius Randle was noticeable, there's a lot to be excited about re the development of Kuzma and Ingram (who I think will be LeBron's Pippen) and the excellent play of Javale McGee. I look forward to Lonzo returning and I think Magic and Rob have to give some serious thought to adding a center. They would not have that problem if they had signed Julius Randle, but KCP was essential to landing LeBron, so there's your trade off.

The Nuggets are growing together as a unit. Is there a player on their team who CAN'T shoot the three well? They did that WITHOUT Gary Harris and IT! IN the end though, they will not be a good defensive team, but they will be a playoff team. I guess we play them again on Tuesday at Staples Center.
