GAME PREVIEW: TRAIL BLAZERS AT LAKERS

by NBA.com

The Portland Trail Blazers and Los Angeles Lakers are playing their best basketball of the season heading into their game Monday night at Staples Center.

The Trail Blazers have won a season-high six in a row and the Lakers a season-best five straight. Portland has won 14 consecutive games overall against Los Angeles, tied for its second-longest winning streak against the Lakers in franchise history.

Portland's current six-game run began with a 123-117 win against the defending NBA champion Golden State Warriors on Feb. 14, and most recently continued with a 108-100 win against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday.

The victory against the Thunder gave the Trail Blazers (37-26) sole possession of third place in the Western Conference, but just a half game in front of the Minnesota Timberwolves and a game ahead of the New Orleans Pelicans, San Antonio Spurs and Thunder.

"It's nice, but it doesn't really do anything for us right now," Portland guard C.J. McCollum told reporters after the Oklahoma City win. "To finish third 20 games from now would be great, but we have a long way to go. We've got a lot of games left to be played, and I'm really looking forward to the challenge of us continuing to stick together defensively, continuing to stick to our principles and come away with close wins."

The Trail Blazers haven't won seven straight games since a nine-game winning streak in November 2014.

The Lakers (28-34) have made a major turnaround since they last played Portland on Dec. 23, a 95-92 loss at Staples Center that was the second defeat in a season-long nine-game losing streak. A major difference between then and now is rookie point guard Lonzo Ball is healthy and playing much better than he did the first three months of the season.

Ball is averaging 12 points, 6.8 rebounds, 7.3 assists and 2.6 steals in the four games since he returned from a knee injury that kept him out 15 games. Ball went 6-for-10 on 3-pointers in a 116-112 win at the Spurs on Saturday night, and is 14-for-22 from beyond the arc since his return, inching his season mark to 33.6 percent.

"He went from hitting the side of the backboard to he can't miss now," Lakers forward Julius Randle told NBA.com. "He's just confident out there making plays, making huge, huge shots down the stretch for us."

Randle moved into the starting lineup shortly after Portland last faced the Lakers and his scoring average has increased every month. He averaged 19.4 points in February and has scored 25 points in both victories in March to bump his season average to 15.1

Maurice Harkless scored a team-high 22 points off the bench in the win against the Lakers in December, but he sat out the win against Oklahoma City on Saturday night with a left patellar tendon strain that occurred in a 109-99 victory over the Timberwolves on Thursday.

Evan Turner started in his place and scored 17 points.

This will be a tough game. The Blazers are currently 3rd in the West.

58-55 Blazers at the Half. Still anyone's game! Their Guard play is Great with Lillard and McCollum, Nurkic is a handful in the middle too.

We lost because Lillard took a crap on us as usual. Guy made 4 3's in a row late. Tough loss, we hung tough and shouldve won this actually.

Robert and I had a blast. The refs contributed to this defeat, but Lillard was Lillard, the Blazers are a solid defensive team, and IT stunk up the joint. We should have won this game. More growth though. Great game to attend. (Robert got stuck sitting next to these fans who I've known for 12 years. The woman is an airhead who still knows nothing about the Lakers or basketball and the guy is a typical Lakers fan who is sick of losing and wants superstars RIGHT NOW! I got stuck sitting next to him at Game 7 vs. the Chowds. Ir wasn't pleasant).

Didn't see the highlights, but judging by the stats - yeah it looks like 'Zo and IT let us down. Whose responsibility was Dame? Gotta be one, or both of those two. Guard the guard, guard. Simple difference between a W and the L last night. Hopefully we hate this loss . . if we had a star closer like we will have soon, we don't lose that game.

It was a very entertaining game. I think people that have been impatient will finally get their wish next season and we will be in the Playoffs. Our younger guys have quality experience now in Randle and Ingram and even Lonzo has shown improvement in his 1st season. Kuzma has had a Good Rookie Season as well. If we add PG-13 and keep most of this Roster, I can see us winning around 45 games next season and being a 7th or 8 Seed. I understand why people have been impatient though, we haven't made the Playoffs since the 2013 Season and wont again. That will be 5 seasons in a row with no Playoffs and we haven't won a Playoff series since 2012. That is a pretty bad stretch for most people to tolerate that are even diehard fans. I have hung with the Lakers being a TrueFan though and have tried to complain as little as possible. I cant wait until next season so I finally have something again to be real happy about.

We could miss the playoffs for 20 more years and I'd still bleed Purp and Gold. As long as they don't move to Las Vegas.

I will always be a diehard Laker fan. I live in Indiana and still Post in here with you guys after all these years, when many from the old Hollingers Page just gave up on us and they live in So Cal. It took only a couple of Bad seasons and 100's of people bailed from Posting, talk about freakin fairweather fans! Sorry but I have to call it like I have seen it. When we were winning championships in 2009 and 2010 we had 100's of Posters, now we have like 5 or 6 like you, Ken, Craig, Robert that are just diehard. I get people are busy with their lives but so am I too. Shit I work a lot of hours but still find time to chat. I have always been a Lakers fan though since I was little so it's in my blood. Since Kareem and then Magic coming in. I like the Pacers too and have followed them for a long time but they are a distant #2, but I am from Indy so that should be ok with anyone - that makes sense. Are you not going to be a Raiders fan anymore when they move to Vegas? That does suck. If the Colts moved I would be pissed!

Will I continue pulling for the Raiders when they move? It's a question I've pondered for a while. I was kind of upset when they moved to LA after winning the SB in '80, because I grew up in SoCal and relocated to NorCal in 1981. I resented the "LA effect" the move had on the team after their SB win in '83, and it was the beginning of Raider fans' hate/hate relationship with Al Davis. When they came back to Oakland in '95 it was nice for The Town and extremely loyal Raider fans, but except for Rich Gannon, Tim Brown and the run to the SB in 2000, we haven't had many highs compared to the extreme lows until these past few years. Even in getting back to the playoffs we fell off, with Jack Del Rio making a shameful exit from his hometown team. Now Al Davis' son is going full bonkers with this move to Vegas and the $100 million to bring Chucky Gruden back. That move MAY be the only reason I continue to claim them as my team. As long as Carr, Cooper, Mack and Jon Gruden are there, I will watch and support. After that, I don't know. Never thought "The Shield" would allow a team in Sin City. Still can't believe it's happening.
