GAME PREVIEW: LAKERS AT MAVERICKS

BY NBA.COM

DALLAS -- Dirk Nowitzki's countdown to 30,000 career points is into the final lap, with the future Hall of Famer needing to score just 20 to reach a mountain only scaled by five others in NBA history.

Considering he is averaging about 22 points per game over a 19-year career, the face of the Dallas Mavericks may well ring up 30K on Tuesday night at American Airlines Center. Barring the unexpected, the milestone is coming at home for Nowitzki, with the Los Angeles Lakers up next as the third opponent in a five-game homestand.

While much of the media talk naturally is centering around Nowitzki, the team is trying to keep it low key. Coach Rick Carlisle declined Monday to discuss Nowitzki hitting 30,000 until after it happens.

Still, the topic is unavoidable.

"We haven't talked about it much, but guys know," Dallas guard Seth Curry said. "Guys know where he's at, and we want to help him get there."

Nowitzki would become just the third player in league history to score 30,000 points with one franchise, joining Karl Malone (Utah Jazz) and Kobe Bryant (Lakers). Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (38,387), Malone (36,928), Bryant (33,643), Michael Jordan (32,292) and Wilt Chamberlain (31,419) are the only players in NBA history with more career points than Nowitzki.

Julius Erving scored a combined 30,026 points between the NBA and the ABA.

"I wanna play within the system," Nowitzki said. "I just don't want to hoist shots to get it. I want to play a smart game and help the team win. We're still chasing a playoff spot, and wins right now are more important. Whenever it happens, it happens."

The Mavs would rather put the focus on the game at hand and their renewed playoff push. Dallas (26-36) is 2 1/2 games out of the eighth and final Western Conference playoff position after the Nuggets defeated the Kings 108-96 Monday.

The Mavericks beat two playoff-caliber teams to open the homestand, including pasting the Oklahoma City Thunder 104-89 Sunday night.

Dallas shot nearly 63 percent in the first half and rolled to a 23-point lead in the third quarter. Curry scored 22, Harrison Barnes had 17 points and Nerlens Noel added 13 off the bench.

"Offensively, we felt like we had a good groove," said Nowitzki, who scored 18 points and grabbed 12 rebounds. "We set pick-and-rolls and spread the floor well. Our guards got in the lane and made some stuff happen, and I thought that was really good."

Curry has been on a tear, averaging 23.3 points since the All-Star break. Dallas is 15-9 since he became a regular starter.

"I feel like it's contagious right now," Curry said. "Everybody's getting a chance to show what they can do and have a fun time playing basketball, so we're just trying to keep this run going and most importantly win ballgames during this home stretch and have a chance to make the playoffs."

The postseason is not in the cards for the Lakers, who are 19-44 and on a seven-game losing streak. An eighth straight loss would match a season high.

The latest setback was 105-97 to the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday at Staples Center. The Lakers rallied from a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie it with two minutes left, only to falter.

Nick Young (19 points), Brandon Ingram (16), D'Angelo Russell (16) led the late rally that at least gave the Lakers a shot.

"I thought that they did a great job of giving themselves a chance at fighting back into the game," coach Luke Walton said. "But we made some crucial mistakes in the last minute or so."

Dallas owns a 13-game winning streak against the Lakers.

The Mavericks have improved a lot over the last month and have a realistic shot at making the Playoffs as an 8 Seed. That team never dies in the Dirk era.

Dirk Nowitzki needs just 20 Points to reach 30,000 Points for his career. He has already said he's playing next season as well. If he stays somewhat healthy and plays in most games next season he will pass Wilt Chamberlain next season who has scored 31,419 Points and move into 5th place in that category. So where does Dirk rank all-time among NBA players? Since the ABA/NBA merger which happened before the 1977 Season I would say he is possibly Top 15 all-time since the 1977 Season ranking players. Guards wise = I would put Jordan, Magic, Kobe, I.Thomas, and Wade ahead of him. Centers wise = I would put Kareem, Shaq, Hakeem, and Moses ahead of him. Forwards wise = I would put Duncan, LeBron, Bird, K.Malone, Julius Erving, and Barkley ahead of him. That is only 15 players right off hand since the 1977 Season I would rank ahead of Dirk. Dirk has won a Championship, Finals MVP, League MVP, and is about to become the 6th player in NBA history to score 30,000 Points. I am not so sure Dirk shouldn't be rated higher than Barkley to be honest, that is splitting hairs for Top 15.

Dirk's a great guy. Happy for him. He certainly has his place in history and I think he was really lucky to get that chip, but he definitely earned it!

To follow this up based on my main criteria in ranking players which is Stats/Championships won/Overall Games won/and stuff like League and Finals MVP's go into it/stuff like impact a player had on his teams go into, and Leadership a player brings to the table goes into as well, it would go as this (1977-2017 since the ABA/NBA merger)
1. Michael Jordan - 6-0 in Finals, 6 Finals MVP's, 5 League MVP's!
2. Magic Johnson - Greatest leader in NBA history!
3. Kobe Bryant
4. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - just taking what he has accomplished since the merger so Kobe would rank higher
5. Tim Duncan
6. Shaq O'Neal
7. LeBron James
8. Larry Bird
9. Hakeem Olajuwon
10. Moses Malone
11. Karl Malone
12. Julius Erving - He had an outstanding NBA career despite being known as the greatest ABA player of all-time
13. Isiah Thomas
14. Dwyane Wade
15. Charles Barkley or Dirk Nowitzki? - these 2 score out the same on my measurables. Dirk has him in Points and has won a Championship and a Finals MVP, both have a League MVP. The impact Barkley had on his teams and league cant be denied though. He was actually the best player on the 1992 Dream Team, he was also a much better Rebounder than Dirk which at only 6'5 says a lot for his work ethic. I am having fun with this today as I love my history of the NBA. Dirk about to break 30,000!

I have an Eye Test on all of these players as I have seen them all live for most of their career's. My Eye Test is telling me that Barkley and Dirk are dead even, what can I say :waaaaa: Since the merger I will say one player that is underrated is our own James Worthy! He was Clutch and unstoppable one-on-one, his Game 7 in 1988 vs the Pistons was a masterpiece :slamdunk:

Dirk absolutely destroyed the Lakers in the 1st Qtr, didn't miss a shot. They let a 38 year old toy with them. Todays young NBA talent is very questionable. 18 Points in the 1st Qtr for Dirk. 2 away. Hell he is on pace to score 72 :roflmao: Mavs up 38-29 after the 1st Qtr. This shows me Dirk is still dangerous, dude isn't human!

Dirk now has 23. With our lousy ass Defense he may go for 50! He is on fire. Mavs now up 17 at 47-30! Congrats Dirk, 30,000

70-52 Mavs at the Half. We don't play any Defense and haven't in years. Dirk scored 25.

I didn't even get through the first half. Just watched Dirk get his and pivoted to some other stuff. Losing has gotten very old. Very hard to watch.

I hear ya, I quit following it at Halftime. We are just terrible. I don't blame people for not Posting because our product is bad. Looking forward to the Draft selection.

I'm really questioning what in the exact hell Luke is trying to do. Sure, we're garbage, but to keep getting dismantled by teams is unacceptable. Somebody help me out here.

I have no idea what we are doing? I am hoping Jeanie takes care of her court case with idiot Jim to remove that distraction and Magic and Rob can get down to business. I have major patience but it's wearing thin after sucking for 4 straight years. You either win or lose at the end of the day, that is the bottomline and we have lost a shit load of games since the 2014 Season and won very little. Some people are in love with Russell, - I have watched and followed almost every game he's played in and nothing he's done has me saying, Yep he is going to tear the league up and be a SuperStar in 2 years. I have watched this game for 40 years and just don't see it. I can be known as a hater but I just don't see it. The only that excites me about our team is, the potential of Ingram and Luke's potential as a Coach. I also love Jordan Clarkson because he is Good and wasn't even expected to do nothing coming out of college. Clarkson is better than Russell IMO.
