GAME PREVIEW: PELICANS AT LAKERS

BY NBA.COM

LOS ANGELES -- Despite the addition of DeMarcus Cousins, the New Orleans Pelicans are still seeking their first win with the center in the lineup. Playing the Los Angeles Lakers might provide a solution when the teams square off Sunday at Staples Center.

The Pelicans (24-38) are 0-4 since acquiring Cousins from the Sacramento Kings on Feb. 20. Since the trade, the Pelicans have lost four of five with their lone victory occurring Wednesday in a 109-86 win over the Detroit Pistons. Cousins didn't play because of a league-mandated suspension after he reached 18 technical fouls.

In their last outing Friday at home, the Pelicans dropped a 101-98 overtime decision to the San Antonio Spurs. The defeat left New Orleans 4 1/2 games out of the final spot in the Western Conference race for the playoffs entering Saturday's games.

Anthony Davis, who sustained an injury to his index finger before returning to the game, scored 29 points and collected nine rebounds, but Cousins air-balled a 3-pointer before the final horn that would have forced a second overtime.

"I think we have to utilize our big guys," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry told the team's website. "We're talented enough that we can play inside-out. And I think when we start inside and create double teams then that opens up free shots on the perimeter. That's where we have to start."

Gentry added that Cousins, who had 19 points and 23 rebounds against the Spurs, isn't the problem.

"The ball has to go into him more. The more he creates double teams the easier the game is on the perimeter, but we have to get him the ball," Gentry said.

Cousins torched the Lakers for 40 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists in a 97-96 win by the Kings on Feb. 14 at Staples. He is averaging 33 points, 12.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists in his last three games against the Lakers.

Los Angeles (19-43), which has lost six in a row, fell to the Boston Celtics 115-95 on Friday at Staples. After a scoreless first half, Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson scored all 20 of his game-high points in the third quarter.

Clarkson's outburst allowed the Lakers to cut a 31-point Celtics lead to 15 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Celtics never allowed the lead to dip below double digits.

"Teams go on their runs and people are going to miss shots," Clarkson said. "I just stayed with the game and the second unit did a good job finding me and getting me open shots."

The Celtics swept the season series for the first time since the 2007-08 season.

"As an organization, fans and players, we don't ever want to get swept by our rivals, but that is very far down the list of things that I concern myself with," Lakers coach Luke Walton said.

New Orleans is another matter. The two clubs split their previous two meetings this season, with the Lakers posting a 126-99 win on Nov. 12. The Pelicans won the last matchup 105-88 on Nov. 29. Both games were at New Orleans.

The teams play their final regular-season game on April 11 at Staples.

At this point of the season with our record & our overall situation and all, I'm in full on tank mode!! Hoping to see growth from the yutes but don't care if we win or lose. And shamefully I'm leaning towards a loss so that we get even more ping pong balls. This is un-Laker like. Dang I sure do hope that this is the last year of this lottery & ping pong ball shit

Lakers played tough down the stretch to make a game of it. Good experience for the yutes and we gained a game on PHX for the #2 spot in the lottery draft

I am all for getting the 2nd or 1st pick at this point and hope Jeanie wins her case, and Magic and Rob can go to work without distraction. We will find out everything by mid May.

I went to the game. Third quarter was ugly, but at least they gave it the old college try .. literally. #2 gives us a better shot at keeping our pick than #3, so this was an important Tank W.

BTW, when I see where Jrue Holliday is at as a player (and he's good, make no mistake about that) and where D'Angelo Russell is right now, I have no doubt in my mind that Russell will be a far superior player to Holliday in about 3 seasons, maybe even an All-Star by then.

I do agree that Russell has more upside than Holliday has. Holliday is Good but nothing special. I want to see Russell on at least Lillard's level in 3 years. I don't expect Westbrook, Irving, Harden, or CP3 level as that is asking for the moon but being a #2 pick in the Draft and an expected leader of the Lakers, I want to see Russell in the Top 5 PG's in 3 seasons. If he isn't at least Top 5 to go along with our other talent, we will never win a Championship unless the Lakers change philosophy and has someone else lead the team as their best player and Russell is a #2 option.

*Actually we should be saying 2 seasons, not 3. By season 4, Russell will be 23 and fully grown. Season 4 is generally when a lot of players break out like Kobe, Paul G, etc.. I will still be patient and give Russell a pass next season if he struggles but in season 4 he needs to bring it and become an All-Star IMO.

23 is still young. Actually 25 is still young. Most professional athletes, depending on position, reach their prime at about age 27. Obviously the very special ones defy that and the NBA has gotten younger, so perhaps that could be adjusted downward a bit, but 6 seasons is about right regardless.

27 IMO is the perfect age for an athlete as that is technically a players prime so I don't disagree there. Having said that when it comes to the NBA I go by seasons played more than I do age because players come into the league when they are 19 now days. If Russell is still very inconsistent and not playing at an All-Star level by season 4 that isn't good, JMO. Most players that have been great get it by then. To me the first 3 seasons is a huge growth process and a feeling out the league for most players = the patient period, then by season 4 they break out. I don't think asking a guy who is a #2 pick in the Draft to be an All-Star by season 4 is asking that much. I am not even saying SuperStar, just Lillard/Lowry level who play at an All-Star level. By the time Russell is 27 he will be in his 8th season.

Season 4 is when Steph Curry even started becoming great and he was even injured in season 3 for most of the season.

He was 24, so if Russell starts becoming great in his fifth season, that works. I don't expect him to become Curry though. he's an all-time great.
