GAME PREVIEW: NUGGETS AT LAKERS

BY NBA.COM

LOS ANGELES -- The Denver Nuggets have put together one of their best stretches of basketball this season. The Nuggets will attempt to continue their solid play when they face the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night at Staples Center.

The Nuggets (21-25) are riding a three-game winning streak after a 123-112 win over the Phoenix Suns in their last outing Saturday despite playing without star forward Nikola Jokic. Jokic sustained a strained hip flexor in Thursday's 127-120 victory over the Suns. He is listed as day-to-day.

Jokic had been on a roll recently until coming up lame. He is averaging 23.9 points, 11.1 rebounds and 4.9 assists in January. Jokic is shooting 60.6 percent from the floor. He is one of the reasons the Nuggets have captured seven of their past nine contests.

In his absence, though, the Nuggets relied on the hot hand of forward Danilo Gallinari, who scored a season-high 32 points against the Suns.

"So without Nikola Jokic, who we put the ball in his hands so much, who's hands are you going to put the ball in? That's Gallo," Nuggets coach Mike Malone told the Denver Post. "Gallo has been a go-to player for most of his career, and he showed you that he's still a heck of a player."

Gallinari took the praise in stride.

"The focus was to get a win," Gallinari told the Post. "I have to be, to bring it every night like this, be aggressive and try to open up space for my teammates and go to the free throw line. I thought I was able to do that pretty well."

The Lakers are mired in a three-game skid after a 96-88 setback Saturday at the Utah Jazz. That win allowed the Jazz to sweep the season series between the two for the first time.

Los Angeles (16-34) has dropped eight of its last nine contests and can't find any consistency, particularly on defense where they rank among the NBA's worse clubs.

However, the Lakers remain upbeat.

"Even when we got down by 10, we still felt like we were in the game," Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson said after the loss to the Jazz, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Last year we used to get down by 10, 20 we thought we were going to get our (butt) whooped. But now we know we're back in here competing. We're still competing, most times we're in games to win. We just gotta figure out how to finish games."

Against Utah, the Lakers played without forward Julius Randle, who was diagnosed with pneumonia. Randle is listed as questionable for Tuesday's game.

Point guard D'Angelo Russell, who has missed the last three games with a mild MCL sprain of his right knee and a strained right calf, also is listed as questionable.

This is the second of three meetings between the clubs. Denver earned a 127-121 decision over the Lakers on Jan. 17, the last time they faced each other at Staples. A strong second-half performance by the Nuggets helped them bolt to a double-digit advantage before holding off a late Lakers' run.

The Nuggets have won three straight over Los Angeles.

Craig we aren't any good. Not to be a Negative Nelly but I have officially hopped on the Tank Train. I want our Top 3 pick. At 16-34 through 50 games the season is over anyway. This will be the 4th straight season where we have been really Bad. 2014 = 27-55, 2015 = 21-61, 2016 = 17-65, and our projected record as of now for 2017 is 26-56. Yeah a 9 game improvement over last season but I am just not seeing the kind of progression I would like too. We lost to the Mavs by 49 Points - that is just ridiculous. I like Luke Walton, I think Brandon Ingram has SuperStar Potential, and I love Nance's and Clarkson's efforts most nights but they are just Role players. I like what I see out of Zubac early as well. Randle is Good but way too inconsistent and I am not sold on Russell leading this team anywhere - too inconsistent and injury prone (knee). I honestly think Clarkson is just as good as Russell is, Lou Williams is better than both. The Deng and Mozgov signings were terrible, they both stink IMO and I don't see how anyone can defend those signings for the amount of years we signed these guys too. The only Good Free Agent we have signed since the summer of 2013 is Lou Williams and we got lucky to get him because for some odd reason nobody else wanted him and we got him late. Like I said not trying to be negative and I have had tons of patience but 4 years of this bull shit is wearing thin. Of course I will still watch and always love my Lakers but I am sick of the product we continue to put on the court. How long should a rebuild take? 3 to 5 years is normal IMO, well it will be year 5 next season since we have been to the Playoffs. We were last in the Playoffs in the 2013 Season, next season will be 2018. We used to make trades to get Great players, get Great Free Agents, etc.. I haven't seen 1 thing since that convinces me we can do either since we landed Steve Nash and Dwight Howard in the summer of 2012. Those 2 didn't work out but the point is we had the ability then to land players like that. Our Salary Cap isn't even an issue which makes it more frustrating.

59-54 Nuggs at Halftime. Our Defense is awful as usual. Defense is about effort and hustle, we seem to not give either most nights.

It's funny watching these games from the perspective of "scouting" the growth of our young players. D'Angelo Russell WILL be a top notch guard in this league. His passing, shooting and defense wil only get better, especially his passing. One of the problems is that the players at the other end of those perfect passes has to finish. Brandon Ingram is so young, but SO talented. Not worried about him either. Randle will be a beast by the time he's 25 and is there any doubt whether Ivica Zubac is going to be the real deal? As much as I like Nance, his knees really concern me. He looks like he's playing hurt. Clarkson I am really iffy about and as much as I like Tarik Black, he's just another expendable dude. Of course, it's realy our veterans who are the reason why we're winning tonight with NIck, Deng and Mozgov having solid games. If Lou gets hot in the fourth quarter, we'll win.

Lakers 76, Nuggets 69.

We may win tonight but Denver isn't any good either. I hope you are right about Russell. IMO if Lou Williams wasn't on our team we would be lucky to win 20 games. He has saved us a bunch this season.
