GAME PREVIEW: MAVS AT LAKERS

By KEVIN MASSOTH, nba.com

Byron Scott is at a loss for words over the Los Angeles Lakers' dismal start. Rick Carlisle's Dallas Mavericks lineup could be bolstered by the return of several key players.

The Lakers will keep searching for a solution as they host the Mavericks on Sunday night.

Scott was lost following Los Angeles' 132-114 defeat at Sacramento on Friday. The Lakers trailed 74-50 at halftime and 31 in the third quarter en route to their second loss to open the season.

The Kings' point total was the highest Los Angeles has surrendered since a 140-106 loss at Dallas on Nov. 21.

"I wish I did have an answer for what happened," Scott said. "If I did I would solve it."

Los Angeles also struggled badly at the defensive end in a 112-111 home defeat to Minnesota on Wednesday. The Lakers have given up their most points in the first two games since allowing a franchise-record 266 to start 1982-83.

The last NBA team to allow 244 points through the first two games was Houston, when it matched that total in 2010-11.

"It (stunk)," Scott said of the defensive effort Friday. "Simple as that. Transition defense was terrible. Guys didn't get back; lack of communication ... It was a lack of effort, also."
The Lakers have allowed 122 points in the paint after an astounding 80-38 disadvantage against the Kings.

Some of Los Angeles' problems offensively have come from beyond the arc, as it's 20 of 69 on 3-pointers. Kobe Bryant is 4 of 21 while Lou Williams (2 for 10), D'Angelo Russell (2 for 8) and Ryan Kelly (1 for 5) have also struggled. Nick Young has made half of his 14.

Problems for Dallas (1-1) aren't as pressing on the court as they are on the injury report. The Mavericks won 111-95 at Phoenix on Wednesday and fell 104-88 on the road to the Clippers on Thursday.

Deron Williams and Wesley Matthews played in the opener but joined Chandler Parsons and JaVale McGee on the sideline Friday.

Matthews was rested for the second of back-to-back games as Dallas eases him back following offseason surgery to repair a torn Achilles. Williams sprained his left knee against the Suns but could play Sunday, while Parsons hopes to make his season debut after offseason knee surgery.

A left tibia fracture has limited McGee to 28 games the last two seasons, and his status is uncertain.

After eight Mavericks scored in double figures against the Suns, John Jenkins led the team with 17 points and Dirk Nowitzki had 16 while shooting 6 of 15. Dallas made 36.1 percent from the field.

"The (lack of) manpower made it tougher," Carlisle said. "We really would have had to play a perfect game. I thought we did a lot of things well, but in the end, from a shooting standpoint, we couldn't hit a bull in the (rear) with a bass fiddle."

The Mavericks have won seven in a row against the Lakers, three of which were at Staples Center.

Expect D Will and Parsons to play. Winnable game but against a very good coach and smart players.

Thinking more about it, the 1st game was almost a must win in terms of 8th seed contention

But this game is equally as important. This is a big game for Kobe, Byron, and Randle.

I saw 2 1/2 good quarters of ball out of the 6 I've watched

As the youngsters grow, we'll get better.
Dallas is a well coached group of vets and they outplayed us for sure.

Julius is still raw.
Kobe is playing at a low level.
Russell is finding himself.
Clarkson is still young.
We're small on the bench.

Yeah this team needs either a) another all-star-caliber scorer or b) for Lou, Clark and Bass to play over their heads and catch fire. We should be able to get win #1 tomorrow vs. the rich creamy Nougats -- but I tell you the squad needs to come out guns-a-blazin' to make up for the incredibly slow start in this one. Kobe, Hibbert and Clark have average-to-good nights, we're right in this.

I could care less about wins and losses. I want to see these kids grow and keep our top 3 protected pick. Randle has me excited and Russell will get better and better with more confidence (which includes his teammates finishing what he starts with his beautiful passes).

We could very well pick in that Top 3. If we do who would be the best prospect coming out? I haven't even thought of it as I thought we would be at least .500 this season. I know you said we would be lucky to win 30 games but I was thinking with the additions more like 40. We still can, 79 games to go.

It takes a long time for young players to learn how to win at this level, never mind the infusion of other new players. Sure, we have more "talent," but we have a bunch of players who are more iso guys to like to create their own shots than anything else. They need to learn how to sacrifice, share the ball and communicate on defense. All of that takes a LOT of time. It is possib;e that the lightbulb will go on and that we will start winning some games, and that will happen when Kobe starts playing better and D'Angelo Russell improves, if that is even in their future.

Both have some type of "it" factor and I almost feel like if they can influence each other more, Kobe would play a bit more appropriate and Russ would take a few more chances. We do have a winnable couple games in the next few

I had us at 0-3 at this time once I heard about Saunders...
I saw the Kings' front court in preseason and DMC is basically the Shaq of this upcoming era. Just a LOAD.
I was surprised that Parsons and Wes were back so early in Dallas but I won't be shocked if that team does not hit an injury streak given some of the players' age or injury history.

Dirk and Ginobli and even Duncan have looked to be on the brink of retirement at various times only to adapt.
Pierce had his moments in Washington's playoff run.
Can Kobe find something that works , and at the same time Russell start to play a bit better overall in terms of shot making and the chemistry with his teammates clicking q bit more.

Or is it like the GREAT Elgin Baylor who simply had to retire for the Lakers to win seemingly.
