MLB - the 7th Inning Stretch

I did a lot of numbers crunching but love doing this type of stuff. What I did was, during the Cubs 2016 WS Title run I combined the Stats of all the Cubs players and best pitchers = 13 games vs the Dodgers and Indians. Was interested to see in 13 games on the biggest stages (NLCS/WS) how great these players performed. 13 games is a pretty decent sample size and I came up with what the Cubs best lineup should be for their Championship team:

CF - Fowler = .281/3 HR/5 RBI/1 Stolen Base (bats Switch)

LF - Schwarber = .412/0 HR/2 RBI/0 Stolen bases (5 game sample in the WS)(bats Left)

3B - Bryant = .286/2 HR/5 RBI/1 Stolen Base (bats Right)

1B - Rizzo = .340/3 HR/10 RBI/2 Stolen Bases (bats Left)

SS - Russell = .245/3 HR/13 RBI/0 Stolen Bases (bats Right)

RF - Zobrist = .271/0 HR/3 RBI/0 Stolen Bases (bats Switch) (MVP of the WS)

2B - Baez = .231/1 HR/6 RBI/2 Stolen Bases (bats Right)

C- Contreras = .182/1 HR/3 RBI/0 Stolen Bases (bats Right)

P - Jake Arrieta = 2-1/2.29 ERA (Righty) (3 games Pitched in)
*If a DH is needed - David Ross = .300/1 HR/2 RBI/0 Stolen Bases (5 game sample, he played in 5 games)

*Mid Reliever/Closer - Montgomery = 1-0/1 Save/3.03 ERA (Lefty) (9 games Pitched in)

*Closer - Chapman = 2-0/1 Save/2.73 ERA (Lefty) (9 games Pitched in)

-I would put this lineup up against any team all-time in MLB history. The Infield Defense with Rizzo, Baez, Russell, Bryant, and Contreras is very solid. Fowler has a solid glove in CF as well. This team has several guys that bat Right or Left too, that is a huge advantage to have. The first 4 guys in this lineup batted .281 or above vs the Dodgers and Indians combined.

The three hottest teams over their last 10 games:

Red Sox 8-2
Astros 8-2
Dodgers 7-3

Nobody is out front too far yet, as the Yankees and Mariners have had great starts and the Diamondbacks and Rockies have fallen back to make the NL West a very mediocre division so far.

Through 50 games the Cubs are 28-22 = Respectable, in 2nd in the NL Central 4.5 games back of the Brewers. The Brewers are 35-20 and have the best record in the NL! Cubs are only a Half game out of the final Wildcard spot, Phillies are 29-22 and hold that currently. As long as the Cubs make the Playoffs they have a chance the win the WS. Goal is just to get in, winning the Division would be nice but a lot of Wildcard teams have won the WS in the past. Overall I am not worried about them making the Playoffs, winning the Division will be tough though as I think the Brewers are for real. Cards are pretty good as well at 28-23. The NL Central has really improved. So far the Yu Darvish experiment has been a fail unfortunately, I really was hoping the Cubs would re-sign Jake Arrieta and not bring Yu in. Arrieta is having a solid season in Philly.

Clayton Kershaw is baaaack!!! Hopefully his return accelerates our climb back to the top of the NL West, which was kicked into 3rd gear with the return of Justin Turner a few weeks ago. Arizona has fallen back to earth after a hot start and Colorado is not much of a threat, so barring any more injuries we should be back in the lead in a few weeks!

MLB has announced that in November, after the WS is concluded, a squad of all-stars will barnstorm Japan - playing against their pro squads. Then in late March 2019 the A's and Mariners will play two exhibition games in the Tokyo Dome. Domo Arigato MLB!

Cubs are now 31-23. In the 4th spot in the NL = 1st WildCard spot. Just 3 games out of 1st in the NL Central behind the BrewCrew. Brewers are 36-22 (best record in the NL) and have just played out of their mind. At least they lost tonight and Cubs won, so the Cubs gained a game on them. Long way to go but June is here now, June is an important month for teams that have struggled a bit in April and May. I am hoping by the end of June the Cubs are able to pass the Brewers so the stretch run in July-September will be easier. We will see?

So far June has been good to the Cubs - (no June Swoon). They are 3-0 this month. Going into June 5th games they are now currently only 2 games out of 1st place in the NL Central. 4th overall in the NL which would get them the 1st Wildcard spot. The NL Standings currently look like this after June 4th:

Playoff teams
East
Braves 35-25 (2nd spot in the NL)
Nats 33-25 (5th in the NL = final Wildcard spot)

Central
Brewers 37-23 (1st spot in the NL)
Cubs 33-23 (4th in the NL = 1st Wildcard spot)

West
D-Backs 31-28 (3rd spot in the NL)

The Dodgers continue to suffer early with starting pitching and find support on the backs of the mid-relievers and closers. In sweeping the 3-game series vs. the Rockies, Los Angeles has climbed within 2.5 games from the NL West lead. Both teams combined for 52 runs ( Dodgers 33, Rockies 19), so it looks like the Dodgers are catching fire!

The comeback win Sunday was huge for the Dodgers, but the starting pitching has become a concern. Alex Wood gave up 6 runs in two innings and had to be pulled. With the number of injuries that have plagued the staff, Wood will need to be much better moving forward. That being said, the Dodgers have won 13 of their last 17 games.

Dodgers will probably end up winning the Division in reality. The D-Backs have came back down to earth, Rockies are Good but nothing special. On paper the Dodgers are the best team in that Division, watch out for the Giants though, they are .500 and Bumgarner is back now.

Cubs win again! Just a half game out of 1st place in the NL Central. The quest for 4 straight NLCS appearances starting to look much better now. I was hoping the Cubs would start kicking ass in June. We have now won 9 of 11. Get back to the NLCS again and then get back to the WS and win another WS. Lets create a Dynasty! Go Cubs!

Cubs just won again Kenny. They are now %Points ahead of the Brewers and in 1st place in the NL Central. Brewers play at Philly tonight.

Cubs 36-24 .600 = best record in the NL, this is despite Darvish being a bust so far.
Brewers 37-25 .597, plays at Philly later tonight

Except for the AL Central, the American League is head and shoulders above the National League so far. The surprising Mariners and the powerful Yanks and Red Sox are winning plenty of games with deft combinations of batting and pitching, while National League division leaders are trying to get some consistency. The Diamondbacks and Dodgers will soon be in a heated battle for the West lead, and it looks like the Cubbies are on a mission to reclaim the Central. In the NL East, the Nats might just walk into another division title if the Braves and Phillies can't get it together. It's a little too early for Wild Card speculation, but the Oakland A's have been surprising this season - staying over .500 and playing some entertaining ball. My wife has already been to two games this year with her co-workers, and I have yet to see one!

Going into a 3 game series starting on Monday night, the Cubs go to the land of where Brew is made. The current NL Central Standings have the Brewers leading the Cubs by just half a game. The teams with 2 best records in the NL clash starting tomorrow. Brewers enter the series at 39-26, Cubs enter at 37-25. The 3-Time NLCS Finalist and former 2016 World Champions are out to make a statement while the Brewers are out to prove they want be the new King of the NL Central. Cubs Manager Joe Maddon - It's only June, but an important early series to see where both teams are at. Cubs Kris Bryant - They have a Very Good team and have played Great so far this season, it will be a tough test for us. Brewers Pitcher Josh Hader - The Cubs have been there, they are Champions and know how to win big games, we have to earn their respect sooner or later and we think we have the club to do so. We want to be where they are at.

-Great stuff!

Cubs too much for Brewers in Game 1 of their 3 game series. Cubs blew the game open in the 11th Inning showing who still is boss in the NL Central with a 7-2 victory at Miller Park. Anthony Rizzo's Homerun in the 11th gave the Cubs a 3-2 lead and then the rest of the gang followed with 4 more insurance runs silencing a sold out Milwaukee crowd. Cubs now enjoy 1st place all by themselves in the NL Central at 38-25 as the Brewers drop to 39-27. Cubs also now own the best record in the NL.
