As I am watching MLB tonight (All-Star edition), here is a look back at the greatest teams in each decade since the 50's. The merger happened in 1947 where African Americans were allowed to play and WWII was over by then, so once the 50's got rolling Baseball was at its best.
The 1950's
Best team - 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers, 98-55 record. They beat the New York Yankees in the 1955 World Series 4-3 showing the teams greatness. Jackie Robinson got his Ring.
The 1960's
Best team - 1961 New York Yankees, 109-53 record. They beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 in the 1961 World Series. That was the season Roger Maris set the HR record with 61 beating Babe Ruth's record of 60.
The 1970's
Best team - 1975 Cincinnati Reds, 108-54 record. They beat the Boston Red Sox in the 1975 World Series 4-3. It was perhaps the best World Series ever played in MLB history.
The 1980's
Best team - 1986 New York Mets, 108-54 record. They beat the Boston Red Sox in the 1986 World Series 4-3. Bill Buckner's blunder in Game 6 allowed the Mets to win Game 6, then they closed the deal in Game 7.
The 1990's
Best team - 1998 New York Yankees, 114-48 record. They beat the San Diego Padres 4-0 in the 1998 World Series. IMO, the greatest team of all-time since the 1947 merger. Record wise it was anyway!
The 2000's-2009
Best team - 2009 New York Yankees, 103-59 record. They beat the Philadelphia Phillies 4-2 in the 2009 World Series. During that season, Derek Jeter passed Lou Gehrig to become the all-time Hits leader in Yankees history with 2,722 Hits. Gehrig had the record with 2,721.
The 2010's-2017 so far
Best team - 2016 Chicago Cubs, 103-58 record. They beat the Cleveland Indians 4-3 in the 2016 World Series ending a 108 year Championship drought. They were only the 2nd team in MLB history to win a Game 6 and Game 7 on the road after being down 3-1 to capture the Championship. The 1979 Pittsburgh Pirates is the only other team to accomplish that feat when they were down 3-1 to the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 and won Game 6 and 7 on the road.
