How do NBA Executives view Russell & Randle?

How do NBA Executives view Russell & Randle?

The Los Angeles Lakers may be a 14-54 team, but they have a nice young core down in Southern California.

While this season has been considered the Kobe Bryant farewell tour, two of the Lakers’ recent first-round draft picks—Julius Randle and D’Angelo Russell—have quietly impressed early on in their careers.

Both players have been shifted in and out of the starting lineup this season, but seem to have cemented their starting roles as of late. Russell has averaged 20.4 points over his last 10 games while Randle is averaging 11.7 points and 10.1 rebounds on the season.

Although both players have been impressive early on in their careers, NBA executives believe that one will be a star, while the other is merely an energy guy, via Ken Berger of CBS Sports:

“Among about a dozen rival executives informally polled about the Lakers’ building blocks of Russell and Randle, a consensus emerged: Russell is a potential star, while Randle is viewed as “a piece” or “an energy guy.”

It’s worth noting that while Russell is viewed as having more potential, the executives concede that it’s a bit early to predict just how good both players will be down the road, according to Berger:

“Several executives inserted the caveat that they’re barely old enough to vote and don’t even have a full season on their resumes yet. “They should know by the end of next season,” one of them said.”

Randle is just 21 years of age, while Russell is 20 years old. Although Randle was technically a rookie during the 2014-15 season, he played in just one game that year. Simply put, both players are essentially playing their first seasons in the NBA.

Following Bryant’s retirement, we will have a better idea of what type of players both Randle and Russell are in 2016-17.

Next season we are going to find out what we really have. In season 2 they should be much better, most Top 10 picks that are any good play much better in season 2.

We have hope. I love the heart, athleticism and drive of both guys and they are two very crucial pieces to a 7-man rotation. We need a couple marksmen who play tight D and of course a 4 who is bigger than Randle accompanied by a center who ain't no punk. I say give it two more seasons and we should be a playoff team, worst-case scenario.
